3、entsinrelatedbiochemicalengineeringstudiesarereviewedinChapter1.Theeffectofgaseouscompoundsonplantcellbehaviorhasbeenlittlestudied,andChapter2focusesonthesegasconcentrationeffects(includingoxygen,carbondioxide,ethyleneandothers,suchasvolatilehor-moneslikemethyljasmonate)onsecondary

4、metaboliteproductionbyplantcellcultures.Twometabolitesofcurrentinterest,i.e.,theantimalarialartemisinin(knownas“qinghaosu”inChina)thatisproducedbyArtemisiaannua(sweetwormwood)andtaxanesusedforanticancertherapythatareproducedbyspeciesofTaxus,aretakenasexamples.Bioprocessintegrationi

5、sanotherhottopicinplantcellculturetechnology.Becausemostoftheplantsecondarymeta-bolitesaretoxictothecellsathighconcentrationsduringtheculture,removaloftheproductinsituduringtheculturecanleadtotheenhancedproductivity.VariousintegratedbioprocessingtechniquesarediscussedinChapter3.Toi
