2、eticallists.Alphabeticallistsdonot,however,takeintoaccounttheactualoccurrenceoftheseverbs.Thearticlepresentsanewcorpus-basedlearninglist,inwhichtheverbsarerankedintheirorderoffrequencyinauthenticEnglish.Thenewlistensuresthatthelearnerhasencounteredthe
3、mostimportantverbs,nomatterwhenthelearningprocessends.Fortheauthorofteachingmaterialsandtheteacher,thenewlistsuppliesanempiricalbasisfortheselectionandgradationofirregularverbsinlanguagecourses.11.ProblemandgoalIrregularverbshauntlearnersofEnglishfrom
4、thebeginningtotheendoftheirstudies.Fullmasteryofirregularverbsseemstobeveryrarelyachieved.ThereareveryfewverblesssentencesinEnglishandirregularverbsbelongtothecoreofEnglish.Inalltypesoftexts,formsofirregularverbsoutnumberthoseofregularverbs.Thelearnin
5、gofirregularverbsisnormallybasedonthewell-knownalphabeticallistswhichrangefromABIDEtoWRITE(Quirketal.1985:115ff.),fromARISEtoWRITE(CollinsCOBUILDEnglishGrammar1990:451)orfromBEtoWRITE(Ungereretal.1989:Iff.).Alltheselistsdifferinthenumberofverbs.Unfort
6、unately,thegrammarsmakenomentionofthebasisonwhichtheselistswerecompiled.Thelistsareprobablybasedonacomparisonofpreviouslistsandtheexperienceand/orintuitionoftheauthor(s)ofagrammar.Alphabeticallistsofirregularverbsareappropriateforlookingup5EvaGrabowsk
7、iandDieterMindtverbforms.Theorderofverbsinalphabeticallistsis,however,ofnoavailinthelearningoftheseverbs,becausetheirorderdoesnotreflecttheirimportanceinlanguageuse.Thisarticleaimsatestablishinganewlearninglistofirregularverbs,aranklistinwhichtheverbs
