3、initiatedaccident(RIA)testswith4unirradiatedZrbaseduraniummetalfuelrodswereperformedtoestablishacriterionwhichshouldbeobservedunderRIAconditions.Ofthefourtests,fuelfailureswereobservedinthetwoteststhatexperiencedthemaximumenergydepositionsof188and212cal/g,respectively.However,thefuelfailureswerenoto
4、bservedattheplaceofamaximumenergydepositionbutatthepositionwherethethermocoupleswereinstalled;onefailedatthepositionwhoselocalenergydepositionwas150cal/g,andtheotheroneattheplacewithenergydepositionof170cal/g.Thefuelfailuresseemtohaveoccurredbecauseexcessivepressure,whichwascausedbythepartialmelting
5、ofthefuelmeat,wasappliedtothecladdingwithareducedthickness.However,otherpartsofthefuelrodsincludingtheplaceofamaximumenergydepositionmaintainedtheirintegrityandabigchangeinthetemperatureandpressureintheinternalcapsule,whichwouldbeanindicationofthefragmentationanddispersionofthefuelmeatintotheinterna
6、lcapsule,wasnotobserved.Visualinspectionalsoshowedthat,exceptforthethermocouplepositions,therewasnotraceofcladfailuresuchastheformationofbrittlecracksinthecladdingormeltingofthecladding.Therefore,fortheZrbaseduraniummetalfuelrods,itcanbeconcludedthatthethresholdenergydepositionabovewhichfragmentatio
