2、ys,Moral,Political,andLiterary,publishedfrom1741,whichprovedhighlyinfluentialinpoliticaltheory,aesthetics,andespeciallyeconomics.In1748HumerevisedtheabstruseepistemologyoftheTreatiseinessayform,astheEnquiryconcerningHumanUnderstanding,thedefinitivestatementofhisma
3、turetheoreticalphilosophy.Combiningelegancewithdevastatinginsight,itpresentstheviewsforwhichheisnowmostfamous,includinghisscepticismaboutinductionandcausation,hiscompatibilistaccountoffreewill,hisrejectionofreli-giousmiracles,andhisadvocacyof‘mitigatedscepticism
4、’.Inthecourseofacolourfullifewhichincludedepisodesinthemilitary,diplomatic,andcivilservices,Humewentontowritemajorworksinethics,philosophyofreligion,andhistory.Buttheargu-mentsexpressedintheEnquiryarethoseonwhichhisrevolutionaryimportance,asoneofthegreatestphilo
