2、ceandTeledyneBrownEngineering.InsoutheastAlabama,PikeCounty’sLockheedMartinplantassemblesmissiles.In2006,EADS,thesecondlargestaerospace/defensecompanyintheworld,openedanAirbusengineeringcenterinMobile.EADSselectedMobile,ALastheplannedproductionsitetobuilditsnext-ge
3、nerationfleetofaerialrefuelingtankers,dependentuponsecuringtheDepartmentofDefensecontract.Theestimatedcontractawardisvaluedaround$35billiontoproduce179tankeraircraft.ThemanufacturingfacilitywillproducetheAirbusA330aircraftonwhichtheKC-45isbased,andthentheaircraftwi
4、llbeconvertedtomilitarytankersatamodificationcenterthatwillbepartofthesamecomplex.Alltold,theproductioncenterrepresentsaninvestmentofatleast$500million,andwillcreateatleast1,500directjobs.EADSNorthAmericahasalsomoveditsKC-45programmanagementofficetoMobile,whereseve
5、ralhundredemployeeswilloverseeproductionanddeliveriestotheAirForce.InadditiontoproducingtheAirForce’sdesiredrateof15aircraftperyear,EADSNorthAmericahascommittedtobuildupto25commercialfreightersinMobile,basedonthesameA330aircraftasthetankers.AviationAviationcompanie
6、stargetedforboththecommercialanddefensesectorsarelocatedthroughoutthestate,withconcentrationsincentralandsoutheastAlabama.AreacompaniesincludeGKNAerospace,withfacilitiesinTallassee,andKellyAerospaceinMontgomery.InthesouthAlabamacitiesofAbbevilleandMobile,TeledyneCo
7、ntinentalMotorsemploysmorethan450workersinthemanufactureofengines,componentsandignitionsystemsforgeneralaviation.Maintenance,Repair&Overhaul(MRO)TheMROindustryisspreadacrossthestate.PemcoWorldAirServicesfacilityinDothanprovidesheavymaintenanceandmajormodificationso
