2、of7Background:ThemajorityofpavementsnowadaysintheU.S.arecomposedofasphaltconcrete(AC)andPortlandcementconcrete(PCC).Inthelatterperiodsoftheirdesignservicelife,bothtypesofpavementsexhibitcrackingdistresses:fatigueandthermalcrackinginACpavements;faultingandmid-slabcrackinginthecaseofPCCpavements.I

3、nterlayers,suchasFiberMatTypeB®,withhighshearandtensilestrengthinadditiontohighductilitycanactasacrack-inhibitorlayerwhenplacedbetweentheoldsurfaceandthenewoverlay.Becauseoftheirstrength,thecrackpropagationthroughsuchaninterlayerwouldrequirehighenergyandstressconcentrations,ultimatelyleadingtoad

4、elayintheformationofreflectivecracks.ThestudyconductedconcentratedontheevaluationofFiberMat®TypeBinterlayer,apatentedtechniquedevelopedbyMidlandAsphaltMaterials,Inc,asasuperiorperformingStressAbsorbingMembraneInterlayer(SAMI)andalsousedwithinthegamutofpavementpreservationtechniquestomaintainaroa

5、dasanenhancedsurfacetreatmentalthoughthisisaspectisnotcoveredinthisreport.TheFiberMat®TypeBreinforcingtreatmentwhenusedasaSAMI,wheretwolayersofpolymermodifiedasphaltemulsionaresprayappliedandglassfiberiscutin-placesandwichedbetweenthetwoemulsionlayers.Overtheemulsion-fiber-emulsionmembrane,aggre
