2、car-likerobotalongapredeterminedpath.Thescopeincludescommonlyusedmethodsfoundinpracticeaswellassometheoreticalmethodsfoundinvariousliteraturefromotherareasofresearch.Thisworkreviewsliteratureandidentifiesimportantpathtrackingmodelsandcontrolalgorithmsfromthevastbackgroundandresources.Th

3、ispaperaugmentstheliteraturewithacomprehensivecollectionofimportantpathtrackingideas,aguidetotheirimplementationsand,mostimportantly,anindependentandrealisticcomparisonoftheperformanceofthesevariousapproaches.Thisdocumentdoesnotcatalogalloftheworkinvehiclemodelingandcontrol;onlyaselect

4、ionthatisperceivedtobeimportantideaswhenconsideringpracticalsystemidentification,easeofimplementation/tuningandcomputationalefficiency.Thereareseveralothermethodsthatmeetthiscriteria,howevertheyaredeemedsimilartooneormoreoftheapproachespresentedandarenotincluded.Theperformanceresults,ana

5、lysisandcomparisonoftrackingmethodsultimatelyrevealthatnoneoftheapproachesworkwellinallapplicationsandthattheyhavesomecomplementarycharacteristics.Thesecomplementarycharacteristicsleadtoanideathatacombinationofmethodsmaybeusefulformoregeneralapplications.Additionally,applicationsforwhi
