4、maingoalsoftheselecturesaretointroduceconceptsofnumericalmethodsandintro-duceMatlabinanEngineeringframework.Bythiswedonotmeanthateveryproblemisa“reallife”engineeringapplication,butmorethattheengineeringwayofthinkingisemphasizedthroughoutthediscussion.Thephilosophyofthisbookwasformedoverth

5、ecourseofmanyyears.MyfatherwasaCivilEngineerandheintroducedmetoengineeringideasfromanearlyage.AttheUni-versityofKentuckyItookmostofthebasicEngineeringcourseswhilegettingaBachelor’sdegreeinMathematics.ImmediatelyafterwardIcompletedaM.S.degreeinEngineeringMechanicsatKentucky.Ilaterobtaineda

6、Ph.D.inMathematicsatGeorgiaTech.Duringmyeducation,Iobservedthatincorporationofcomputationincourseworkhadbeenex-tremelyunfocusedandpoor.ForinstanceduringmycollegecareerIhadtolearn8differentprogrammingandmarkuplanguageson4differentplatformsplusnumerousothersoftwareapplications.Therewasalmostn

7、otechnicalhelpprovidedinthecoursesandIwastedinnumerablehoursfiguringoutsoftwareonmyown.Atypical,butuseless,inclusionofsoftwarehasbeen(andstillisinmostcalculusbooks)tosetupadifficult‘applied’problemandthenaddtheline“writeaprogramtosolve”or“useacomputeralgebrasystemtosol
