2、future.Whileitistheoreticallyandmethodologicallyimportant,arguablythisrefutationcouldbeoflittlepracticalconsequenceworldwidebecauseitcouldberejectedasasmallexamplethatislargelyirrelevantelsewhere;butnotsoChina.Chapter9reviewstheEnglishlanguageliteratureonChineseeducation,addin
3、gan-otherelementtothefalsifiabilityofthestagesbygeneralisingtherefutationtoshowthatmillennia-oldeducationalformsmakeunlikelytheadoptionofWesternmodelsofprogressiveeducationinChina.RecentresearchintoclassroomsonmainlandChinahasfoundanapparentlystableandwide-spreadapproachtoform
4、alisticclassroomteachinginprimaryandsecondaryschoolsthatissupportedbyinstitutionalisedpracticesforteacherstodevelopwithinthisstyle.InthePopperiansense,thecaseofPapuaNewGuineaprovidesarefutationofBeeby’sstagesmodelbecauseitdemonstratesthatthemodeldoesnothaveuni-versalapplicatio
5、n.But,withapopulationofsome5million,PapuaNewGuineacontainsunderone-tenthofonepercentoftheworld’spopulation.ArguablytherefutationcouldbeoflittleconsequenceonaworldscalebecausePapuaNewGuineacouldberejectedasaminorexamplethatislargelyirrelevanttotherestoftheworld;butnotsoChina.Wi
