2、hooldistricts.Awealthofprojectsarecur-rentlybeingfundedbygovernmententitiesandprivateindustrytobringtechnologies,suchastheInternet,intotheK-12schools.BuildingacomputerinfrastructurecapableofsupportingpopularInternetactivities,suchasobtaininginformationviatheWorldWideWeb(WWW),isnotala

3、rgetechnicalchallengeifmonetaryandsupportresourcesareavailable.SeveralschoolsystemshavebeenawardedlargegrantstodemonstratetheeffectivenessofusingboththeInternetandcomputationalsciencetoimprovecurricula.Thechallenge,however,istobuildandsupportacomputerinfrastructurethatsatisfiestheneed

4、softeachersandadministrators,iscompliantwiththeInternetEngineeringTaskForce(IETF)recommendations1,andisaffordablewithintheschoolsystem'scur-renttechnologybudget.Unfortunately,mostschooldistrictsthatwishtobuildacom-puterinfrastructureinaccordancewiththeIETFrecommendationsfeeltheymusts

5、eekoutsidefundingsourcestocoverthehighcapitalandrecurringcostitems.TheHighPerformanceComputingandCommunications(HPCC)ProgramisafederalprogramthathasmanydiverseprojectsprimarilyfocusedonkeepingtheUnitedStatesattheforefrontofcomputertechnology.Oneoftheseprograms,theInformationInfra-str

6、uctureTechnologyandApplications(IITA)K-12Program,isaneducationaloutreachactivitythatisdesignedtoenhancescienceandmathcurriculaintheK-12community.However,theuseofcomputationalscienceandtelecommunicationstoenhancecurric-ularequiresasubstantialcomputerinfrastructure.AspartoftheIITAK-12P

7、rogram,NASALangleyResearchCenterhasbeendevelopingacomputerinfrastructuremodelwithlowrecurringcosts,tomeetthedemandsoflargeschoolnetworks.Theinitialtest-bedforthislow-costcomputerinfrastructuremodelincludedsixpublichighschoolsfromsixdifferentschooldistrictsandoneconsortiumschoolthatre
