2、ChinaAbstractCoverletterplaysanimportantroleinthejob-huntingprocessbecauseitisaneffectivemeansfortherealizationofbettercommunicationandunderstandingbetweenthejob-seekerandpotentialemployer.ThepresentthesismakesadetailedanalysisonthemodalexpressionsoftheEnglishcoverletters.Theauthorin
3、tendstofindoutthedistributionofdifferentmodalexpressions,thevaluedistributionandtheorientationdistributionofthesemodalexpressions.Fifty-twoEnglishcoverlettersfromnativespeakersareselectedascorpusinthepresentresearch.TheresearchisconductedonthebasisofHalliday’smodaltheory.Accordingtot
4、hedatacollection,thedistributionofthemodalexpressions—modaloperators,modaladjunctsandmodalmetaphorsareexplored.Allofthesemodalexpressionsareanalyzedtofindouttheirvaluedistributionandorientationdistribution.Thevalueofdifferentmodalexpressionsiscategorizedintohigh,medianandlow,threecat
5、egoriesandtheorientationisclassifiedintoexplicitsubjective,implicitsubjective,explicitobjectiveandimplicitobjective.ItwasfoundthatinallmodalexpressionsofEnglishcoverletters,modaloperatorsareusedmostfrequently,whilethemodaladjunctsaretheleast.InthewritingofEnglishcoverletters,thejobap
6、plicantsareinclinedtochoosemedianvalueandlowvaluemodalexpressionstoincreasethepossibilityofgettingthejob.Astotheorientation,theimplicitsubjectiveandexplicitsubjectivearepreferredtotheothertwoorientations.Thepurposeofthestudyistohelpthereaderhaveabetterunderstandingofcoverletterfromth
