2、thernetandrunningDigitalVisualFORTRANonWindowsNT.Thisisan8Gflop/s(peak)systemwith2Gbytesofmemory.Thetotalcostwasunder£50,000.WehavejustfinishedportingMPIontothisenvironmentandarenowabletorunmainstreamUKHPCcodessuchasANGUS.Webelievethatoursystemisahighlycost-effectiveen

3、vironmentforthedevelopmentandmedium-scaleexecutionofscienceandengineeringcodes;itcurrentlyrepresentsthebiggestsinglecomputationalresourceatSouthampton.Wepresentourearlyexperienceswiththisleadingedgemedium-scaleresourceandsomeearlyperformanceresultsforsequential,MPIandP

4、VMFORTRANcodes.INTRODUCTIONTheconsolidationofthemicroprocessormarkethasresultedintherenowbeinglittledistinctionbetweenthePCandworkstationmarkets.Bytakingadvantageoftheinherenteconomiesofscaleinprocessors,memory,switchingtechnologyandsoftwareitispossibletoutilisecommodi

5、tycomponentstobuildsupercomputer-levelmachinesatlowcost.TheBeowolfproject1hasconcentratedonusingIntel-basedmachinesrunningLinuxtoprovideverycost-effectiveproductionmachinesforanumberofapplications.WehaverecentlypurchasedadedicatedcomputationalclusterofDECAlphaworkstati

6、ons.ThesecompeteonanodefornodebasiswithsystemsfromIBMandSGI/Crayformanyscientificandengineeringapplications,butbyusingcommoditycomponentsthecostislowerbyafactorofatleastthree.ByalsoutilisingtheWindowsNToperatingsystemfurthersavingscanbemade.Ourlongtermgoalistoprovideaf

7、ull,remoteaccessserviceonthisHPCsystem.1SYSTEMCONFIGURATIONTheexactconfigurationoftheinstalledDECAlphaclusterisgiveninTable1.Asthisisacomputeclusteronlytwo21"andtwo15"monitorswerepurchased.Theotherfourmaincomputenodesshareasinglemonitorthroughamanualswitchbox.Thetotals
