2、@nus.edu.sg)AbstractThestellareconomicperformanceoftheAsia-Pacificregioninthe90sledmanyscholarstocreditConfucianismastheimpetusforitprovidedtheculturalbackgroundconduciveforentrepreneursofthisregiontoexcel.Someevenbelievedthata‘‘ConfucianRevival’’isathandandh

3、aveproposedthe21stcenturytobethe‘‘ConfucianCentury’’.Althoughthecausesofeconomicgrowthandsuccessarecomplexandlikelytovaryfromonecountrytoanother,thesignificanceofculturehasbeenemphasized.HicksandRedding(1983)commented,‘‘astherearewelloverahundreddevelopingcou

4、ntries,thealmostperfectcorrelationbetweenChineseheritageandeconomicsuccesscouldhardlybeduetochance.’’AnotherstudybyGordonRedding(1990)onthespiritofChinesecapitalismsuggestedastronglinkbetweenConfucianvaluesandmodernoverseasChinesebusinessenterprises.However,

5、whenthesameregiontriggeredaglobaleconomiccrisisafewyearsago,fingerswerealsopointedatConfucianism,namingitastheculpritbehindthedownfallofChineseentrepreneurship.Further,peopleoftenlooselyrefertoConfucianismorAsianValueswhenanalyzingfactorsrelevanttotheeconomya

6、ndsocialmatters.Theydosowithoutfirstsynthesizingthesystemofthoughtuponwhichtheybasetheirclaims,therebyweakeningtheirarguments.Moreover,studiesonChinesevaluesarecertainlyinsufficientifnotmisconstruedbyscholarswithnoChinesebackground.HowthendoesConfucianisminflue
