2、asonablediscussionaboutthemeaningoflife.Thiscourseasksyoutocreateapersonalphilosophyoflife,awrittendescriptionwhatyouthinkmakesthemostsenseinregardtothreeimportantideas:TheSelf,God,andMoralValues.Yourmaintaskinthecoursewillbetocompleteafinalessaythat
3、describesyourphilosophicalapproachtothewaythesethreeideasrelatetothemeaningoflife.Theclasswillspendthequarterworkingtowardthismaintask.Philosophyisareasonablediscussionaboutthemeaningoflife.Inourcourse,webreakdownthediscussionintothreetopics.First,we
4、askaboutself(forexample,“whatisaperson?”and“whatamI?”).Second,weaskaboutGod(forexample,“doesahigherpowerthatpersonallycaresforusexist?”and“istheexistenceofevilevidencethatGoddoesnotexist?”),andmoralvalues(forexample,“isrightandwrongabsoluteorrelative
5、?”,and“DoesGodcareabouthumanmoralchoices?”).Philosophyrequiresnotonlythatweexpressthoughtsaboutthemeaningoflife,butalsothatwegivereasonsinsupportofthosethoughts.Philosophicaldiscussionoftencentersonideasinbooks,butideasarecommunicatedinmusic,painting
6、,sculpture,theatre,television,andmoviesaswell.Todaymoviesareoftenanimportantsourceofphilosophicalideas.Thisdoesn’tmeanthateverymovie(orbook,orpainting,orplay)offersphilosophicalideas!Whatmakesanidearelevanttoaphilosophicaldiscussionishowrelevantitist
7、othemeaningofourlives.Philosophyisareasonablediscussionaboutthemeaningoflife.HOWTHECLASSWORKSTherearefivecomponentsoftheclass;threeareclassactivities(lecture,discussion,andviewing)andtwoareassignments(textbookreading,philosophyoflifepapers).ClassActi
