2、1792,atFieldPlace,nearHorshaminSussex,intoanaristocraticfamily.Hisfather,TimothyShelley,wasaSussexsquireandaMemberofParliament.ShelleyattendedSyonHouseAcademyandEtonandin1810heenteredtheOxfordUniversityCollege.In1811ShelleywasexpelledfromthecollegeforpublishingTheNecessityofAtheism
3、,whichhewrotewithThomasJeffersonHogg.Shelley'sfatherwithdrewhisinheritanceinfavorofasmallannuity,afterheelopedwiththe16-yearoldHarrietWestbrook,thedaughterofaLondontavernowner.ThepairspentthefollowingtwoyearstravelinginEnglandandIreland,distributingpamphletsandspeakingagainstpoliti
4、calinjustice.In1813Shelleypublishedhisfirstimportantpoem,theatheisticQueenMab.Thepoet'smarriagetoHarrietwasafailure.In1814ShelleytraveledabroadwithMaryWollstonecraftGodwin,thedaughterofthephilosopherandanarchistWilliamGodwin(1756-1836).Mary'syoungstepsisterClaireClaremontwasalsoint
5、hecompany.DuringthisjourneyShelleywroteanunfinishednovella,TheAssassins(1814).Theircombinedjournal,SixWeeks'Tour,reworkedbyMaryShelley,appearedin1817.AftertheirreturntoLondon,Shelleycameintoanannualincomeunderhisgrandfather'swill.HarrietdrownedherselfintheSerpentinein1816.Shelleyma
6、rriedMaryWollstonecraftandhisfavoritesonWilliamwasbornin1816.Shelleyspentthesummerof1816withLordByronatLakeGeneva,whereByronhadanaffairwithClaire.Shelleycomposedthe"HymnToIntellectualBeauty"and"MontBlanc".In1817ShelleypublishedTheRevoltOfIslamandthemuchanthologized"Ozymandias"appea
