4、sfirmsoftenmentionedinliterature(e.g.Stanworth–Curran,1976;Storey,1994;Beaver,2002).ItremindsusthatSMEsareinnowaypowerless.Insteadtherearenumerouswaysinordertoshapeevendifficultmarketsituations.Whensearchingfortheoreticalframeworkswhichaddressvoluntarismregard

5、ingtherelationshipbetweenthefirmandtheexternalbusinessenvironment,wecanfindsomeinterestingapproaches.E.g.,theresource-basedview(Barney,1991),thedynamiccapabilityperspective(Teeceetal.,1997),andthecompetencemovement(Hamel–Prahalad,1994)emphasizetheproactivepote

6、ntialofthefirmbyreferringtocertaintypesofresourcesandcapabilities.Theirbasicreasoningiswelladoptedinmanagementresearchandisalreadyonthewaytopenetratesmallbusinessmanagement(e.g.Shepherd–Wiklund,2005).Moresurprisingly,thepotentialofentrepreneurshiptheoryisnotwe

7、llscrutinizedsofar,althoughitoffersarichtraditionandisclosetotheparticularcircumstancesSMEshavetocopewith.Againstthementionedbackground,thequestionarises:Whatcanwelearnfromentrepreneurshiptheory?Thepaperisorganizedasfollows:Thefirststepisaboutabriefandstructur

8、edoverviewofentrepreneurshiptheoryanditsdevelopmentoverthelastcenturies.ThedifferentstrandsofentrepreneurshipresearchareusefulinordertoidentifythosebeingrelevanttoSMEmanagement.Thi
