5、,potentiallymoreefficientbusinesspracticespossible,includingcategorymanagement,computerassistedordering,andvendormanagedinventory.Finally,inthelate1990stightlabormarkets,thenewcompetitivethreatofon-lineshoppingandincreasingconsolidationofsupermarketchainsp
6、osedsignificantnewmanagementchallengesatthestorelevel.In1999,TheRetailFoodIndustryCenterattheUniversityofMinnesotaestablishedtheSupermarketPanel.Thisannualsurveyofsupermarketmanagersprovidesinformationonstorecharacteristics,operations,andperformance.ThePan
7、elisuniquebecausetheunitofanalysisistheindividualstoreandthesamestoresaretrackedovertime.Thismakesitpossibletotracetheimpactsofnewtechnologiesandbusinesspracticesastheyareadopted.AfterapilottestofthePanelin1999with100non-randomlyselectedstores,full-scaleop
8、erationforthePanelbeganin2000.Arandomsampleof2,000storeswasselectedfromalistofnearly32,000supermarketsintheU.S.thatacceptfoodstamps.QuestionnairesweremailedtothesestoresinJanuary2000.Atotalof344storesresponde
