4、ineanacademicfieldwithafasterandmorerobustgrowth.Bioethicsisspreadinglikekudzu,colonizingnewareasevenwhereitisunfamiliar,un-expected,andunwelcome.Itisgeneratingnewcenters,newjournals,newcourses,newcommissions,newfundingsources,and,perhapsmostvisibly,anewly
5、politicizedpresenceinAmericanpubliclife.Americanscanhardlyopenanewspaperorwatchtelevisionwithoutencounteringaso-calledbioethicsexpert.Thefieldhasavitalityandenergythatoftenleadsoutsiderstoshaketheirheadsindisbelief.Itusedtobethecasethatphilosophersenviedan
6、dresentedthewealthandpublicprofileofbioethics,whilebioethicistsenviedandresentedtheacademicprestigeofphilosophy.Nomore.Americanbioeth-icistshardlyevenpayattentiontophilosophersanymore,muchlessenvythem.ThesedaysIworryaboutsubmittingpaperstophilosophyjournal
7、sandbookanthologiesbecauseIfearthatnobodyinbioethicswillreadthem.Yettheredoesseemtobeawidespreadfeeling,evenamongthoseinthefield,thatbioethicsmaybegrowinginthewrongdirection.Bioethicsgeneratesafairamountofresentment,especiallyoutsidetheUnitedStates,whereit
