1、FeweconomiceventshavehadamoreprofoundorenduringimpactthantheGermanhyperinflationof1923,stillrememberedpopularlyasarootcauseofHitler'srisetopower.Yetinrecentyearsmanyhistorianshavearguedthatinflationarypolicieswere,onbalance,advantageoustopost-1918Germany,bothboostinggrowthandhelpingtoreducerepara
2、tions.Thescholarlyconsen-susisthattherewasnoviablealternativetoinflation.InPaperandironNiallFergusontakesadifferentview.FocusingontheinfluentialHamburgbusinesscommunity,heexposestheflawsinthecontemporaryjustificationsforinflationarypolicies.Theinflation,heargues,didseveredamagetotheGermaneconomy,
3、erodedthefoundationsofbourgeoissocietyanddiscreditedWeimar'swelfarestate.Aboveall,itdidnothingwhatevertoreducereparations.AlternativepoliciesmightinfacthavestabilisedtheGermancurrencyin1920.Toexplainwhysuchpolicieswerenotadopted,theauthorpointstolong-termdefectsinthepoliticaleconomyoftheReich.Hes
4、uggeststhattherewasathirty-year'eraofinflation'after1897inwhichtheinadequacyoftheReich'sfiscalandmonetaryinstitutionsallowedeconomicinterestgroupstowieldexcessivepower.Thisinternalimbalanceofpowerwasreversedonlyinthe1930s.ThusPaperandironrevealsnotonlytheWilhelmineoriginsofWeimar'sfailure.Italsoc
