4、movementsofsecessionandmoreorlessendemiccivilwarinseveralcountries.EvenintheWest,theoriginalhomelandofnationalismandthepartoftheworldoncethoughttohaveexperienceditssteepestdecline,nationalismhasshownasurprisingcapacityforsurvivalandadaptation,notleastinthesocie
5、tiesthatmakeuptheUnitedKingdomofGreatBritainandNorthernIreland.Nationalism,itisclear,isaglobalphenomenon,demandingtreatmentinaglobalperspective.Itishappeningeverywhere;atthesametimeeveryexpressionseemsinsomesensetofeedoffexpressionselsewhere,leadingonetosuspect
6、somecommonsourceorsourcesthatarefuellingthephenomenon.Nationalismmayhavehaditsorigininaparticularplaceandataparticulartime-lateeighteenth-centuryEurope,bygeneralagreement.Butnotonlydiditsideologythenspreadacrosstheworld,carriedasoftenasnotbytheEuropeanempiresof
