2、edinrevisedform10May2001;accepted19May2001AbstractThefracturebehaviourofaluminaceramicswasstudiedusingabiaxialball-on-3-balltest.Thepolishedsurfacesofthealuminaspecimenswereindentedatpositions0,1,2and3mmdistantfromthecenterofthespecimenalongapath(A),passingthroughthemiddlepointbetween

3、twosupportingballsfromthecenterofthespecimen,andalsoalongapath(B),passingthroughthetoppointofasupportingballfromthecenterofthespecimen.Thefracturestrengthoftheindentedspecimenswasmeasuredusingthebiaxialball-on-3-balltest.Thefracturestrengthincreasedwithincreasingdistanceoftheindentedp

4、ositionfromthecenterofthespecimen.Thefracturestrengthofthespecimenindentedalongapath(B)washigherthanthatofthespecimenindentedalongapath(A).Itwasalsofoundthatthefracturewasbroughtaboutbythetangentialstressratherthantheradialstresswhentheindentationsweremadeatpoints1and2mmdistantfromthe
