3、nceoflisteningcomprehension.SinceshortclasshoursaredevotedtoEnglishlisteningaswementionbefore,mangystudentshavetopracticeitbythemselvesoutsidetheclassroom.Thus,theyappealtothecolorfulEnglishtapes,radios,andmovies.Totheirdisappointment,theeffectsofimprovementare
4、notobvious.Intheauthor’Ssurvey,morethan10topstudentsofnon—EnglishmajorstoldmethattheyhadgreatdifficultyinunderstandingconversationsbetweentwoEnglishnativespeakers.Thesingleexamplemaynotbeconvincing,butitatleastshowsaverycommonphenomenonthatEnglishlisteningissti
5、llweakformostEFLleamers.Sohowtoeffectivelypracticelisteningwithinlimitedtimeremainsabigquestion.Foralongtime,beingabletoclaimknowledgeofEnglishformostpeoplemeansbeingabletowriteandreadEnglishmaterials.SolisteninghaslongbeenconsideredastheCinderellaskill(Nunan,2
6、001),whichisneglectedandisassumedtodevelopautomaticallythroughexposuretothelanguageandthroughpracticeofgrammarandvocabulary(Hedge,2002).SomelearnershavelearnedEnglishforsixyearsormorethansixyears,buttheystillhavetroublewithunderstandingnativespeakerswhentheyfac
