3、edurallearninginvolvesonlymemorizingoperationswithnounderstandingofunderlyingmeanings.Conceptuallearninginvolvesunderstandingandinterpretingconceptsandtherelationsbetweenconcepts.Therelationshipbetweentheselearningtypeshasbeendiscussedforalongtime.Forsomeresearchers,proc

4、eduralknowledgeformsthebasisforconceptualknowledge,whileforotherstherelationshipisreversed.Theaimsofthestudyreportedherewerefirsttoexplorethenatureofstudents’learningintraditionaldifferentialequations(DEs)coursesandsecondtoclarifytherelationshipbetweenproceduralandatVIVA

5、CommunityCollegesonApril5,2011conceptuallearning.Toaddresstheseaimsanachievementtestwith13open-endedques-tions,probingproceduralandconceptuallearningwithregardtoDEs,wasadministeredto77candidatemathematicsteachers,enrolledinatraditionalDEscourse.Theanalysisofstudents’resp

6、onsestothetestitemsshowedthat85%ofcandidateteachersgavecorrectresponsesonproceduralquestionswhilstonly30%ofthemgavecorrectresponsestotheconceptualquestions.Thesefindingssuggestthatthecandidateteachers’learningwasprimarilyproceduralinthecontextoftraditionalinstructionandc

7、ontentandthatthisdidnotleadthemtodeveloptheconceptualknowledgeneededtointerpretnewsituationsproperlyandtoproducenewideasbeyondtheonestheyhadmemorized.Inaddition,baseduponthestudentlevelsinbothproceduralandconceptuallearning,itwasconcludedthatconceptuallearningsupportsand
