2、ectsoflisteningandreadingontheincidentalacquisitionandretentionofvocabulary.Twohundredthirtystudentsparticipatedinthestudy:Theyeither(a)readthreeacademictexts,(b)watchedthreelectures,or(c)receivednoinputatallandjustcompletedthevocabularymeasures.Thisstudyalsoassessedandcomparedtherelationshipbetw

3、eenacquisitionthrougheachofthesepresentationmodesandthefollowingfactors:frequencyofoccurrence,typeofword,typeofelaboration,andpredictabilityfromwordformandparts.Thereadingsubjectsmadegreatervocabularygainsthanthelisteningsubjectsforallfourlevelsofproficiencyanalyzed.Inspectionofpairwisecomparison

4、sseemedtoindicatethatthedifferenceingainsbetweenthereadingandlisteningconditionsdecreasedasthestudents’proficiencyincreased.Similartrendsemergedforretention.Readingalsoresultedingreaterretention1monthaftertheinput,exceptforthehighestproficiencystudents.Forthisgroup,nosignificantdifferencewasfound

5、betweenthelisteningandreadingdelayedposttestscores.Therelationshipamongeachofthefourfactorswasanalyzedandvocabularyacquisitionwasalsofoundtovaryacrossinputmodes.Introduction36Apartfromtheirroleinthedisseminationofscholarlyknowledge,academiclisteningandreadinghavebeenfoundtobesourcesofvocabularyac

6、quisitionforsecondlanguage(L2)learners(Parry,1991; Vidal,2003).ThisisespeciallyrelevantforstudentsenteringEnglish-mediuminstitutionswhoneedtoenhancethebreadthanddepthoftheirvocabularyknowledgeinordertosucceedintheiracademicandprofessionalpursuits.Despitetherelevanceoflisteningandreadingforvocabul
