3、canberunonWindowsandarangeofUNIX/Linuxoperatingsystems:RalsorunsonMacintoshes.Thisisthefourtheditionofabookwhichfirstappearedin1994,andtheSenvironmenthasgrownrapidlysince.Thisbookconcentratesonusingthecurrentsystemstodostatistics;thereisacompanionvolume(VenablesandRipl
4、ey,2000)whichdiscussesprogrammingintheSlanguageinmuchgreaterdepth.SomeofthemorespecializedfunctionalityoftheSenvironmentiscoveredinon-linecomplements,additionalsectionsandchapterswhichareavailableontheWorldWideWeb.ThedatasetsandSfunctionsthatweusearesuppliedwithmostSe
5、nvironmentsandarealsoavailableon-line.Thisisnotatextinstatisticaltheory,butdoescovermodernstatisticalmethod-ology.Eachchaptersummarizesthemethodsdiscussed,inordertosetoutthenotationandtheprecisemethodimplementedinS.(Itwillhelpifthereaderhasabasicknowledgeofthetopicoft
