3、nothingcertainlyconcerningtheoriginofTarotcards.Asusual,however,inmattersbelongingtooccultartsandso-calledscience,theplaceofknowledgehasbeenoccupiedbyuncriticalreveriesandinventionwhichisnotlessfraudulentbecausethefraudmaybefrequentlyunconscious.WhentheartistGringonn
4、eur,inorabouttheyear1393,isaffirmedtohavetohaveproducedasetofpicture-cardsfortheamusementofKingCharlesVIofFrance,ithasbeenaffirmedthatsomeoftheirdesignswereidenticalwithTarotTrumpsMajor.Theevidenceisthefactofcertainbeautifulandantiquecard-specimens-inallabouttwenty-s
5、ix-whicharescatteredthroughdifferentcontinentalmuseumsandwereattributedinthepasttoGringonneur.TheyarenowheldtobeofItalianorigin,moreorlessintheearlyyearsofthefifteenthcentury,andtherearenoextantexamplespriortothatperiod.Buttoestablishthispointonexpertauthorityatitsva
6、lueisnottofixtheoriginofTarotcardsinrespecttodateorplace.Itisidle,Imean,toaffirmthatVenetian,BologneseandFlorentinevestigesofsetsallocatedto1400-1418arethefirstthatwereeverdesigned.Inview,however,ofthegenerationsofnonsensewhichwehaveheardtestifyingonthesubject,itmust
7、besaidthatitisequallyidleandmischievoustoaffirmthattheyarenot.When,towardsthecloseoftheeighteenthcentury,CourtdeGebelinfirstdrewattention,asamanoflearningandanantiquary,tothefactofTarotcards,heproducedsketchesoftheTrumpsMajorintheeighthvolumeofLeMondePrimitif.Inthefo
