1、IndicatorsofSocialQuality:OutcomesoftheEuropeanScientificNetworkLaurentJ.G.vanderMaesenandAlanC.WalkerSocialQualityandQualityofLifeInOctober2001,theNetworkIndicatorsofSocialQualitystartedtheprocessofcreatingsocialqualityindicators.ThisprojectoftheEuropeanFoundationonSo

2、cialQualitywassupportedbytheEuropeanCommission(DGResearch)underFrameworkProgramme5(vanderMaesenetal.2000).TheNetworkconsistedofrepresentativesofuniver-sitiesfrom14partnercountriesandtwoEuropeanNGOs.Overitsforty-two-monthlifetheNetworkheldfourmeetings.Threeplenarymeetin

3、gswereorganisedwithallassistantsthankstothefinancialsupportbytheDutchScientificFoundation(NWO).Alsothroughthecreationofuniquenationalreferencegroupsonsocialquality,theNetworkhasengagedmorethanahundredscientistsandpolicymakersinitswork.TheprojectwascompletedinApril2005.

4、Theintriguingquestionwashowtotheo-reticallylegitimisethechoiceofsocialqualityindicatorscomparedtotheindicatorsconstructedinthecontextof‘qualityoflife’approaches,asdevelopedforexamplebyZUMAoftheUniversityofMannheim(Noll2000;Berger-Schmitetal.2000)andtheEuropeanFoundatio

5、nontheImprovementofWorkingandLivingConditionsinDublin(Faheyetal.2002).Contributorstothesocialqualityapproachargue,thatwhilerespectfordifferencesandtheopennessofthefuturecanbeseenasthemainthemesoftheintellectualdebateamongthesocialtheoristsandphilosophers,themainstreamo

6、fthebehaviouralscienceshasturneditsempiricalinteresttoindividualperspectiveson‘qualityoflife’.Thiscanbeseenasawaytoaddressthequestionwhat‘the’qualityoflifemightbefromascientificperspective,tryingtoavoidpoliticalandnormativeissues.Thisresearchhasbeenconductedworldwidean

7、dproducednumerousdescriptionsof‘qualityoflife’.Ascanbegatheredfromthemanyofthousandoftitlesofpublications(cf.thewebsiteoftheAustralianCentreonQualityofLife,ofDeakinUniversity).Impressiveinquantitativeoutputastheresearchparadigmappearstobe,itshows,overwhelminglythemanyd
