3、r;ajealousmaidenaunt;andatyrannicalJesuittutorwhoinspiredinhimlifelongfeelingsofanticlericalism.Theonlypersonhefeltanyclosenesstowashismaternalgrandfather,arespectedphysicianwhoembracedthecultureoftheEnlightenment.In1799,attheageofsixteen,theyoungmanleftfo

7、rethantwohundredpseudonymsheemployedinhislifetime.DuringthisperiodhefellinlovewithMatildeDembowski(néeViscontini),whoservedasthebasisforhisheroines.SuspectedofbeingaFrenchsecretagentandofinvolvementinleft-wingplots,thewriterwasexpelledfromItalyin1821bytheA
