5、rtsofthesilentexplorer.NewsofDr.DavidLivingstone’sdiscoveries—andhisowndiscovery,inthiscase—reachedLondoninMay1872tothedelightofinternationalaudiences.2OneimpressedreaderwasJosephConrad,whorecalledhearingtheaccomplishmentsofexplorers“whisperedtomeinmycradle”andreadingasabo
6、yLivingstone’sMissionaryTravelsandResearchesinSouthAfrica(1857),asourceofthesentimentaldaydreamsthatwouldonedaymakehimasteamboatcaptainontheCongo.3Thenewspaperitselfreadlikeanexplorationnarrativeatsuchmoments,nevermoresothaninthejournalismofStanley,whointroducedthepresstot
7、erritoryformerlyreservedfortheexplorer’slonevoice.Stanley’sdispatchesgaveaudiencestheimpressionsofacorrespondent,theadventuresofanexplorer,andtheplotsofanovelist,allinasinglecolumn.Yetthesedispatchesalsogaveaudiencesamisleadingperspectiveonevents,asConradlearnedwhenhisownA
