3、andaregulator.Thestep-downtransformerisusedtodecreasetheAClinevoltagefrom115VRMStoanRMSvalueneartheDCvoltageneeded.Theoutputofthestep-downtransformeristhenfedintoadioderectifiercircuitthatonlyoutputspositivehalvesoftheinputsinusoid.Afilteristhenusedtosmoo

4、ththerectifieroutputtoachieveanearlyconstantDCvoltagelevel.Aregulatorcanbeaddedafterthefiltertoensureaconstantoutputvoltageinspiteofchangesinloadcurrentandinputvoltages.Twodifferenttypesofvoltageregulatorswillbeusedinthisproject.ThefirstinvolvesaZenerdiod

5、ecircuitandthesecondinvolvesavoltageregulatorcircuit.AZenerdiodecanbeusedasavoltageregulatorwhenthediodeisreversebiasedandoperatedinthebreakdownregion.Tomaintainvoltageregulation,theZenerdiodemustbeoperatedinthebreakdownregionatacurrentgreaterthanthe"knee

6、"current(IZK).ForcurrentsgreaterthanIZK,theZenerdiodecharacteristiccurveisnearlyverticalandthevoltageacrossthediodechangesverylittle.Ofcoursethereisamaximumcurrentthediodecantolerate,sogoodregulationisprovidedwhenthediodeisreversebiasedwithcurrentsbetween

7、IZKandIZMAX.Zenerdiodesareavailablewithawidevarietyofbreakdownvoltages.Anothertypeofvoltageregulatorisavailablewiththe7800seriesregulators.Thisseriesoffixed-voltageregulatorsisnumbered78xx,wherexxcorrespondstothevalueoftheoutputvoltage.Outputvoltagesfrom5
