3、tinedayoffTripoliharbor,ontheNorthAfricancoastinwhattodayisLibya.TheUnitedStates,atwarwithTripolisince1801,hadsentsquadronsannuallytoprotectitsMediterraneanshippingandblockadethecity-state.Philadelphia,commandedbyCaptainWilliamBainbridge,waspartofthe1803–04squadronledbyCommodoreEdwinPreble.Thes
4、hipwasoneoffive“subscription”frigatesbuiltfortheQuasi-WarwithFrance,whichwasfoughtbetween1789and1800.Thesevesselshadbeenpaidforbycitizensofthecitiesinwhichtheywereconstructed.Philadelphia,builtinitsnamesakecity,wasthelargestofthefive,157ftlongand39ftwide,anddisplacing1,240tons.Ratedat44guns,in1
5、804itcarriedabatteryof2818-pdrlonggunsand1632-pdrcarronades.Inpointoffact,PhiladelphiawassmallerthantheUSNavy’sfirst44-gunfrigates,includingtheother44-gunfrigateinthatyear’ssquadron,Constitution.Thisvesselwas175ftlong,displaced1,576tons,andcarriedamainbatteryof24-pdrlongguns.Regardless,Philadel
6、phiawaslargerthanmostEuropeanfrigates,andonaparinbothsizeandbroadsidewithEuropeanfrigatesratedat44guns.Itwasaformidablewarship.AswithConstitution,Philadelphia’ssizeandpowerallowedittocommandtheseasonceawayfromthecoast,butitwasoutofplaceinshallowwaters.(Philadelphia’sdraftwas20ft6inaft,18ftatthe
