1、III.ISCONSCIOUSNESSPHYSICAL?1.Itisaninterestingfactthatmuchoftheliteratureonthesocalledmind-bodyproblemconcernstherelationbetweensensations--and,inparticular,thesensationofpain--andbodilystatesasinprincipledescribablebythenaturalscience.2.Intheselectures,aselsewhere,I
2、havebeenstressingtheradicaldifferencebetweensensorystatesandconceptualstates,between,say,astateofsensinga-cube-of-pinklyandastateofthinkingaboutsomething,e.g.,theStraitsofBosphorus.Ifwethinkofthemind-bodyproblemasthatofhowtofitconceptualactsandbodilystatesintoonecoher
3、entpicture,thenweshouldalsobepreparedtoentertainasensoriumbodyproblem.3.Certainly,totakecareoftheoneisnot,ipsofacto,totakecareoftheother.Andthetroublingfactisthat,asnotedabove,muchofwhatpurportstobediscussionofthemind-bodyproblemhasactuallybeenaboutthesensoriumbodypro
4、blem.4.Nowitisexactlythesensorium-bodyproblemwhichIproposetodiscussonthepresentoccasion.Consciousnessisamany-splendoredthing,butasusedinthetitleitreferstosensoryconsciousness,thesortofconsciousnesswehavesimplybyvirtueoffeelingapainorsensingacube-of-pinkly.5.Thepointof
5、the'assuch'istoalertthereaderthatanattemptwillbemadetoimplementthefamiliar,ifcontroversial,distinctionbetweensensorystates--inKantianterms,the'manifoldofsense'--andthestatesofawarenessas1whicharesointimatelyconnectedwiththeformerinperceptualconsciousness.6.Awarenessas
6、isaspecialcaseofconceptualconsciousness.Ihavehadsomethingtosayaboutitinthefirstlecture.Anadequateaccountwouldrequireafullscaletreatmentofthecategoriesofintentionality,andhencewouldfarexceedtheavailablespace.Ihave,however,exploredthetopicatdepthonotheroccasions2andshal
7、lfeelparticularlyfreetodrawuponthefruitsofthatanalysis,sinceitpreservesfamiliarfeaturesoftheclassicaltheoryofconceptualacts--eventhough,intheprocess,somenewwineispouredintovenerablebottles.7.Icertainlydonotwishtosuggestthatfulljusticecanbedonetothesensorium-bodyproble
