2、cquaintancestrengthened,untilPeacockbecamethefriendinwhosejudgmentShelleyputespecialtrust.Thereweremanypointsofagreement.Peacock,atthattime,shared,inamorepracticalway,Shelley'sdesireforrootandbranchreform;bothworepoets,althoughnotequallygifted,andbothlovedPlatoandtheGreektra
3、gedians.In"CrotchetCastle"PeacockhasexpressedhisowndelightinGreekliteraturethroughthetalkoftheReverendDr.Folliott.ButShelley'sfriendshipforPeacockincludedatrustinhimthatwasmaintainedbypointsofunlikeness.Peacockwasshrewdandwitty.Hedelightedinextravaganceofasatirewhichusuallys
4、aidmorethanitmeant,butalwaysresteduponafoundationofgoodsense.Thenalsotherewasatouchofthepoettogivegracetotheutterancesofaclear-headedmanoftheworld.ItwasPeacockwhogaveitsnametoShelley'spoemof"Alastor,ortheSpiritofSolitude,"publishedin1816.The"SpiritofSolitude"beingtreatedasas
5、piritofevil,Peacocksuggestedcallingit"Alastor,"sincetheGreek[Greektext]meansanevilgenius.Peacock'snovelsareunlikethoseofothermen:theyarethegenuineexpressionsofanoriginalandindependentmind.Hisreadingandhisthinkingrantogether;thereisfreequotation,freeplayofwitandsatire,graceof
