2、eliedonthefirewallstoenforcetheirsecuritypolicybyprotectingtheirlocalnetworksystemsfromthenetwork-basedsecuritythreatandillegaldataaccess.However,thesecontrolsdonotprovideacomprehensivesolutiontosecureaprivatenetworkconnectedtotheInternet.Thepurposeofthispaperisfocusedonthe
3、origin,definition,functionalitiesandcharacteristicsofthevariousfirewalls.Then,thispaperalsodescribessomemethodstobypassthefirewall.2.IntroductionAsweallknow,theInternethasexperiencedarapidandtriumphantimprovementinthelastdecade.[Rolf(1997.5)]indicatesthattherehavehadoverone
4、millioncomputernetworksandwelloveronebillionusersbytheendofthelastcentury.TheInternetispenetratingeveryfieldallovertheworld.Atthebeginning,theInternetwasbuiltonlyasresearch-orientedanditscommunicationprotocolsweredesignedforamorenon-malignantenvironmentthannowexists.Butwhen
5、thetimewenton,theInternetistwistedsteadilyfromtheinitialoneanditsenvironmentismuchlessreliable.Ithasalldangerousandriskysituations,intendedandmalignantattacksandnastypeoplethatwecanfindinthereallifesocietyasawhole.Today,whentheusersareconnectedtotheInternet,theyareenabledto
6、reachandcommunicatewiththeoutsideworldthroughtheInternet.Butatthesametime,however,theoutsideworldcanreachandinteractwiththepremisesnetworkbythesameway.Therefore,itisveryimportantfortheuserstoprotecttheirlocalsystemsfromthespitefulattacksfromtheoutside.3.ThetypesoffirewallAs
7、statedin[Wikipedia(2006.10)],thetechnologyoffirewallfirstemergedinthelate1980sandthefirstpaperofthistechnologywaspublishedin1988.[Tom(2001)]writesthatthefirewall(asshowninFigure1)isakindofgatewaythatlimitsandcontrolstheflowoftrafficloadbetweennetworks,typicallybetweenaninte
