2、dinstructuringInternet-basedcollaborationnetworks.Wecomparetheobservedvaluesofreciprocityandtransitivityin95Internet-basedcollaborationsnetworksand40socialnetworkswithpredictionsofRandomGraphmodels.Allthetestednetworksexhibitreciprocitiesthatsignificantlydeviatefromthepre
3、dictions.AlltheInternet-basedcollaborationnetworksandsomeofthesocialnetworks–notall-exhibittransitivitycompatiblewiththepredictions.Weconcludethatexchangemechanisms,responsibleforreciprocity,areatworkinallnetworks.Cognitionbalancemechanisms,responsiblefortransitivity,area
4、tworkinmanybutnotallsocialnetworks,butthereisnoevidenceforitinanyofthetestedInternet-basedcollaborationnetworks.theexplanationsforthesebehavioursarebasedonthebroadcastnatureoftheInternet-basedcollaborationnetworks.WebrieflydiscussthepracticalimplicationsforInternet-basedc
5、ollaborativelearning.IntroductionInternet-basedlearningenvisionstheparticipantsasadistributednetworkofInternet-basedcollaboratingactorswhoarepurposefullyseekingandconstructingknowledgewithinameaningfulcontext(Hiltz,1994).NumerousreportsemphasizethesocialnatureofInternet-b
6、asedcollaborationnetworks(Haythornthwaite,2002;RichardsonandSwan,2003).Henceweturntoemergencetheoriesofsocialnetworks(MongeandContractor,2003)forsuggestionsformechanismsunderlyingtheirbehavior.NetworkExchangetheory(BienenstockandBonacich,1997;Willer,1999)postulatesarecipr
7、ocalselectionprocess.Reciprocityisacommonattributeofsocialnetworksofpeopleandanimals(SkvoretzandFaust,2002),andoforganizations(MongeandContractor,2001).(Hakkinenetal.,2001)dididentifyreciprocityofinteractioninInternet-basednetworks,and(WangandFesenmaier,2003)foundthatreci
