1、H.D.Fong(1903-1985)EditorialNoteOnehundredyearsago,ZhangZhidongtriedtoadvocateChineselearningbysaying:"Thecourseofanation,beitbrightor"gloomy,thepooloftalents,beitlargeorsmall,areaboutgovernanceonthesurface,andaboutlearningattheroot."Atthattime,theimperialistpowerscastmenacinge

2、yesonourcountry,andthedomesticsituationwasdeteriorating.ThequickinfiltrationofWesternlearningmadcthelong•standingChincsetraditioncomeunderheavychallengc.Inthosedays,ChineselearningandWesternlearningstoodsidebyside.Literature,historyandphilosophysplitup,whilemanynewbranchesoflea

3、rningsuchaseconomics,politicsandsociologywereflourishing,whichmademanyChinesedazed.However,thereappearedavitalandvigorouslearningclimateoutoftheconfusingsituation.ItwasatthiscriticalmomentthatmodernChinesescholarshipmadethetransition-byexchangingviews,basingonprofoundcontemplat
