5、.ABSTRACTAftertheStaggersRailAct,ClassIrailroadswereallowedmoreflexibilitytosellandabandonsectionsofrailtrack.Thesesectionsoftrackwerelessprofitableandhadlimiteddensitypermile.Muchofthistrackwastakenoverbyrailcarriersknownasshortlines,whichhavehadmixedresults,withmanyoft
6、hembeingviablewhileotherswerenot.Thisstudyexaminestheseshortlinestodeterminewhatmakesthemviableandefficient.Previousresearchstudieshavenotaddressedthisissueadequatelybecauseofthedatausedandtheadvancementsintechniquesthathavetakenplacesince.Therehasnotbeenarecentstudyonth
7、eshortlinerailroadindustrythathasutilizedtheTranslogCostFunction.Furthermore,thedatausedinthisstudyweresuppliedbytheshortlinesthroughuseoftheAmericanShortLineDatabase,whichwascompiledbytheUpperGreatPlainsTransportationInstitute.Thisstudydemonstratedthatshortlinescouldach
8、ievegreatercostsavingsiftheyweretoincreasetheirdensity(revenuetonmilespermile)andtheirsize(mileofroad).
