1、ThemodalpreteritinDutch(comparedtoGerman)Ithasrecentlybeenarguedinthelinguisticsliteraturethat(some)tenseshaveacoremeaningthatcaneitherbeemployedintheconstructionoftemporalmeaningorintheconstructionofmodalmeaning(Brisard1989,Langacker1991,DeMulder&Vetters2002,a.o.).Inlinewithth
2、esefindings,IwilltrytoaccountfortheroleofthepreteritinDutch,comparedtothesituationinGerman.Thispaperseekstofindouthowthemodalinterpretationiscompositionallycomputed,i.e.howtheinformationencodedbythetensemarkerinteractswithcontextualfactorstobringabouttheinterpretationintendedby
3、thespeaker.Initsbasicuse,thepreteritservestolocateaSoAinthepast.Inothercontexts,however,thetemporallocationisnotthedefaultreadingEg.Bleefjemorgenmaarthuis!(‘Ifonlyyou’dstayathometomorrow!’).Iwillarguethatthetemporallocationcomesaboutbymeansofcontextratherthanverb-inherently.Thi
4、spaperwillfurtherspecifythewayinwhichtheconceptualimportoftheDutchpreteritrelatesastateofaffairstotheground,startingfromLangacker’stheoryofgrounding(1991),combinedwiththeframeworkofmentalspaces(Fauconnier1994).WhilethepreteritinGermanclearlyisatensethatcanoccurbothinindicativeo
5、rsubjunctivemood(eg.kamvs.käme),inDutch,itisnoteasytodecidewhetherwearedealingwitheithertenseor‘mood’whencomingacrossaninstancelikebleef.EventhoughinDutchtheonlyproductivemoodistheindicative,insomeofitsusesithasmodal(subjunctive)meaning.Exceptforsomeoldarchaicformulaslikewareor
6、hattethesubjunctivemoodhasgotlost.Asaconsequence,thecontextswhicharetypicallycoveredbythesubjunctiveIIinGerman,arerenderedbytheindicativeinDutch.Thiscaneitherbethepreteritindicativeofzullen(zouden)combinedwiththeinfinitive,orthe‘synthetic’preteritindicativeofthemainverb.Thefact
7、thatthisispossibleatall,mustimplythatthereareatleastcertainsimilaritiesbetweenthesubjunctiveontheonehandandthe‘modal’preteritintherespectivelanguages.TheanalysisIpresentherewillalsotouchupontheconditionsofinterchangeabilityfortheconstructionzou+infinitiveandthepreteritinDutch.(
