3、rationale:IntheWeddellSeapropernewlyformedbottomanddeepwaterisaccumulatedandprovidesanaturallylowpassedrecordofthetimehistoryofbottomanddeepwaterformation.AdditionallytheWeddellSeaproperrepresentsparticulariceconditionswhicharesupposedtoberepresentativefor
4、theAtlanticsectoroftheAntarcticOcean.Themeasurementsconsistoflargescalehydrographicsectionswitharepeatcyclebetween2and4yearsandmooredinstrumentstoavoideffectsofalising.Theobservedparametersareusedtoestimatewatermasspropertiesandtransportsaretemperature,sal
5、inity,CO2,CFCs,currentsandicethickness.ThemooredobservingsystemismaintainedintheWeddellSeaConvectionControl(WECCON)projectsince1996withminormodifications.Currentmetermooringswereredeployedin2005afterabreakin1996.Aredeploymentisplannedfortheaustralsummer200
6、7/2008.Themooringsareequippedwithcurrentmeters,temperatureandconductivitysensorsandsomewithbottompressurerecorders(Tab.1).Additionaltothemoorings,verticallyprofilingfloatsaredeployedinthecontextoftheARGOprogramme.ThemooringscarrysoundsourcesforRAFOSlocatio
7、nofthefloats.Upwardlookingsonarsin150mdepthareinstalledon4mooringsintheframeworkofWCRP’sAntarcticSea-IceThicknessProject(AnSITP)todeterminetheseaicetransports(http://www.awi-bremerhaven.de/Research/IntCoop/Oce/ansitp/index.html).In1989,1990,1993,1996,1998.
