2、onsumedbythereactionitself,theymaybeinhibited,deactivatedordestroyedbysecondaryprocesses.Inheterogeneouscatalysis,typicalsecondaryprocessesincludecokingwherethecatalystbecomescoveredbypolymericsideproducts.Catalystsdonotchangetheextentofareaction:theyhaven
3、oeffectonthechemicalequilibriumofareactionbecausetherateofboththeforwardandthereversereactionarebothaffected(seealsothermodynamics).Thefactthatacatalystdoesnotchangetheequilibriumisaconsequenceofthesecondlawofthermodynamics.Supposetherewassuchacatalystthat
4、shiftedequilibrium.Introducingthecatalysttothesystemwouldresultinreactiontomovetothenewequilibrium,producingenergy.ProductionofenergyisanecessaryresultsincereactionsarespontaneousifandonlyifGibbsfreeenergyisproduced,andifthereisnoenergybarrier,thereisnonee
