3、safterthecessationofdiplomaticrelationsbetweentheUnitedStatesofNorthAmericaandthebelligerentnationsoftheOldWorld,newsofmoreorlessdoubtfulauthenticityfiltered,fromtimetotime,intotheWesternHemispherefromtheEastern.Thencamethefruitionofthathistoricpropagandawhichisbestdescribedbyits

4、ownslogan:"TheEastfortheEast--theWestfortheWest,"andallfurtherintercoursewasstoppedbystatute.Evenpriortothis,transoceaniccommercehadpracticallyceased,owingtotheperilsandhazardsofthemine-strewnwatersofboththeAtlanticandPacificOceans.Justwhensubmarineactivitiesendedwedonotknowbutth

5、elastvesselofthistypesightedbyaPan-AmericanmerchantmanwasthehugeQ138,whichdischargedtwenty-ninetorpedoesataBraziliantanksteamerofftheBermudasinthefallof1972.AheavyseaandtheexcellentseamanshipofthemasteroftheBrazilianpermittedthePan-Americantoescapeandreportthislastofalongseriesof

6、outragesuponourcommerce.Godaloneknowshowmanyhundredsofourancientshipsfellpreytotherovingsteelsharksofblood-frenziedEurope.Countlesswerethevesselsandmenthatpassedoveroureasternandwesternhorizonsnevertoreturn;butwhethertheymettheirfatesbeforethebelchingtubesofsubmarinesoramongtheai
