3、lassics,thatmysuccesswasfarfromsatisfactory.WhenDr.Eitel's"HandbookfortheStudentofChineseBuddhism"appearedin1870,thedifficultyoccasionedbytheSanskritwordsandnameswasremoved,buttheotherdifficultyremained;andIwasnotabletolookintothebookagainforseveralyears.NorhadI
4、muchinducementtodosointhetwocopiesofitwhichIhadbeenabletoprocure,onpoorpaper,andprintedfromblocksbadlycutatfirst,andsowornwithuseastoyieldbooksthereverseofattractiveintheirappearancetothestudent.InthemeantimeIkeptstudyingthesubjectofBuddhismfromvarioussources;an
5、din1878begantolecture,hereinOxford,ontheTravelswithmyDavisChinesescholar,whowasatthesametimeBodenSanskritscholar.Aswewenton,IwroteoutatranslationinEnglishformyownsatisfactionofnearlyhalfthenarrative.InthebeginningoflastyearImadeFa-hienagainthesubjectoflecture,wr
6、oteoutasecondtranslation,independentoftheformer,andpushedontillIhadcompletedthewhole.Thewantofagoodandcleartexthadbeensuppliedbymyfriend,Mr.BunyiuNanjio,whosenttomefromJapanacopy,thetextofwhichisappendedtothetranslationandnotes,andofthenatureofwhichsomeaccountis
