1、华中科技大学硕士学位论文IntroductionPoliticaldiscoursehasbeenattractingincreasingattentionfromlinguisticsandhasbeenapproachedfromvariousfieldslikerhetoric,pragmatics,andstylisticetc.Successfulpoliticalspeechesareacknowledgedaseffectiveutilizationoflanguageresources.Politicsandlanguagear
2、esocloselyrelatedthatpoliticsislanguageand,atthesametime,languageispolitics(Lakeoff,1990).Inotherwordslanguageisdesignedtoserveinhumanaffairsanditisasocialpractice(Fairclough,1989).Systemicfunctionallinguistics(SFL)(Halliday,1994)considershowpeoplecommunicateincontext,usingm
3、eaningfulstretchesofutterancesastheirunit.ItisgenerallyacknowledgedthatHalliday’ssystemicfunctionallinguisticsisespeciallyinstrumentalintextanalysis.HowevertheHallidayanlinguisticsfailstoconsider,oratleastpayenoughattentionontheaspectofsemanticevaluation(Wang,2001),whichisth
4、ecoreconceptionofAppraisalSystemanditstheoreticalcontributionofSFLbyMartinandWhite.Appraisalis“aparticularapproachtoexploring,describingandexplainingthewaylanguageisusedtoevaluate,toadoptstances,toconstructtextualpersonasandtomanageinterpersonalpositioningsandrelationships”(
5、White2001).TheAppraisalTheoryisanextensionofSFL,stillunderdevelopment,withmostworksofarfocusedontextualanalysisespeciallymediatexts.Axelrod(2008)summarizesthetwocoreconcernsashowspeakersadoptandindicatepositiveornegativeattitudesandhowpeoplenegotiatepositioningwithdialogicpa
6、rtnersTheReasonsforthepresentstudyAmericanpresidentBarrackObamamadeanimpressivepresidentialcampaignduringwhichhiselectionspeecheswerehighlypraisedbythemediaandtheaudienceshomeandabroad.Therearevariousreasonsbehindhischarminwhichhissuccessfulspeechdeliveryweightssignificantly
