3、ottheirnames.HowdidthemusicoftheruralSouthgettobeknownas"hillbilly"music?AccordingtoArchieGreeninanarticleintheJournalofAmericanFolklore,theword"hillbilly"hasbeeninprintsinceatleast1900asacatchalldesignationforthesouthernbackwoodsinhabitants.Notuntil1925,however,wasthetermus
4、edinassociationwiththemusicoftheruralSouth.ItcanbetracedtoarecordingsessioninNewYorkCity,January15,1925attheOkehStudio.AstringbandcomposedofpeoplefromNorthCarolinaandVirginiarecordedsixsongs.Beingtheyhadnonamefortheirgroup,theirleader,vocalistAlHopkins,askedRalphPeertofindas
5、uitablenamefortheband.Peerchosethename"Hillbillies".Beforethattime,themusicwassimplyknownas"hillcountrytunes,""oldtimemusic,"etc.In1932TexRitter’ssongsbecameknownas"western,"andintheearly1940s,ErnestTubb,RedFoley,andothersouthernmusiciansinfluencedDeccaRecordstoadopttheterm"
6、countrymusic."ByJune1949Billboardmagazinebeganlistingcountrymusicpopularitychartsunder"country"or"country&western."Themusicweknowas"bluegrass"wasnotalwayscalledbythatname.Irememberwhenweusedtocallit"mountainmusic."Actuallybluegrassmusicbecameknownassuchinthelate1940s–itgotit
