3、ed.Theeminenceformedpartofanextensivetractofpastureland,andwastraversedbycowpathsinvariousdirections;but,strangetotell,thoughthewholeslopeandsummitwereofapeculiarlydeepgreen,scarceabladeofgrasswasvisiblefromthebaseupward.Thisdeceitfulverdurewasoccasionedbyaplentifulcropof"woodwax,"whichwearsth
4、esamedarkandglossygreenthroughoutthesummer,exceptatoneshortperiod,whenitputsforthaprofusionofyellowblossoms.Atthatseason,toadistantspectator,thehillappearsabsolutelyoverlaidwithgold,orcoveredwithagloryofsunshine,evenbeneathacloudedsky.Butthecuriouswandereronthehillwillperceivethatallthegrass,a
5、ndeverythingthatshouldnourishmanorbeast,hasbeendestroyedbythisvileandineradicableweed:itstuftedrootsmakethesoiltheirown,andpermitnothingelsetovegetateamongthem;sothataphysicalcursemaybesaidtohaveblastedthespot,whereguiltandfrenzyconsummatedthemostexecrablescenethatourhistoryblushestorecord.For
