5、ptain.Hisfatherdiedwhenhewasfouryearsold.He1edthereashyandratheroverprotectedlife.HegrewupinseclusionwithhiswidowedmotherElizabeth-andfortherestofherlifetheyreliedoneachotherforemotionalsolace,yetnotwhollyuncongenialtohisartisticdevelopment.Hawthorneturned
6、towritingafterhisgraduationfromBowdoinCollege.Betweentheyears1825and1836Hawthorneworkedasawriterandcontributortoperiodicals.Healsowroteseveralsuccessfulshortstories,whichwerecollectedinTwice-ToldTales・InsufficientearningsasawriterforcedHawthornetotakeajobi
7、ntheSalemCustomHouse.By1842,hewasabletoearnenoughtomarrySophiaPeabodyandmovetoConcord,whichwasthenthecenterofthetranscendentalmovement.HawthornereturnedtoSalemin1845andin1850,hismostfamousnovel,TheScarletLetterwaspublished・HisnextnovolwasTheHouseoftheSevcn
