3、tlyunfolded,oruponalinearnarrative.Rather,theyaregroundeduponaseriesofstrikingconceptualdistinctions–betweentyrannyandtotalitarianism;action,labor,andwork;politicalrevolutionandstrug-glesforliberation;thinking,willing,andjudging–whichArendtelaboratesandweavesintocomplexthematicstrands.Theint
4、erconnectionsbetweenthestrandsaresometimeslefttothereader.Thus,itisnosurprisethatnew-comerstoherworkareoftenbaffledbyhowthepiecesfittogether(notonlyfrombooktobook,butoftenwithinasinglevolume).Theycannothelpwonderingwhetherthereis,infact,aconsistentperspectivebehindhervariedreflectionsonthenatur
5、eofpoliticalevil,thegloriesofpoliticalaction,andthefragilityofcivilizedsociety(the“humanartifice”)inthefaceofmountingnatural,technological,andpoliticalpressure.ThesituationisnothelpedbythefactthatmanycommentatorsonArendthavetendedtoseizeupononestrandofheroeuvre,elevatingherreflectionsonpolitic
