3、osedays,however,itwasRhea,theMotherofthegodsthatwasgivenhonor.Later,inthe1600's,inEnglandtherewasanannualobservancecalled“MotheringSunday”.ItwascelebratedduringJune,onthefourthSunday.OnMotheringSunday,theservants,whogenerallylivedwiththeiremployers,wereencouragedtoreturnhomeandhonortheirmother
4、s.Itwastraditionalforthemtobringaspecialcakealongtocelebratetheoccasion.IntheU.S.,in1907AnnaJarvisfromPhiladelphia,beganacampaigntoestablishanationalMother'sDay.Jarvispersuadedhermother'schurchinGrafton,WestVirginatocelebrateMother'sDayonthesecondanniversaryofhermother'sdeath,the2ndSundayofMay
5、.ThenextyearMother'sDaywasalsocelebratedinPhiladelphia.Jarvisandothersbeganaletter-writingcampaigntoministers,businessmen,andpoliticiansintheirquesttoestablishanationalMother'sDay.Theyweresuccessful.PresidentWoodrowWilson,in1914,madetheofficialannouncementproclaimingMother'sDayanationalobserva
6、ncethatwastobeheldeachyearonthe2ndSundayofMay.ManyothercountriesoftheworldcelebratetheirownMother'sDayatdifferenttimesthroughouttheyear.Denmark,Finland,Italy,Turkey,Australia,andBelgiumcelebrateMother'sDayonthesecondSundayinMay,asintheU.S.2.TheOriginofChristmasThenameChristmasisshortfor“Christ
