1、TheOxford3000™dThekeywordsoftheOxford3000havebeencarefullyselectedbyagroupoflanguageexpertsandexperiencedteachersasthewordswhichshouldreceivepriorityinvocabularystudybecauseoftheirimportanceandusefulness.Theselectionisbasedonthreecriteria.ThewordswhichoccurmostfrequentlyinEnglishareinclud
2、ed,basedontheinformationintheBritishNationalCorpusandtheOxfordCorpusCollection.(Acorpusisanelectronicallyheldcollectionofwrittenorspokentexts,oftenconsistingofhundredsofmillionsofwords.)However,beingfrequentinthecorpusaloneisnotenoughforawordtoqualifyasakeyword:itmaybethatthewordisusedver
3、yfrequently,butonlyinanarrowlydefinedarea,suchasnewspapersorscientificarticles.Inordertoavoidincludingtheserestrictedwords,weincludeaskeywordsonlythosewordswhicharefrequentacrossarangeofdifferenttypesoftext.Inotherwords,keywordsarebothfrequentandusedinavarietyofcontexts.Inaddition,thelist
4、includessomeveryimportantwordswhichhappennottobeusedfrequently,eventhoughtheyareveryfamiliartomostusersofEnglish.Theseinclude,forexample,wordsforpartsofthebody,wordsusedintravel,andwordswhichareusefulforexplainingwhatyoumeanwhenyoudonotknowtheexactwordforsomething.Thesewordswereidentified
5、byconsultingapanelofoverseventyexpertsinthefieldsofteachingandlanguagestudy.ThewordsoftheOxford3000areshowninthemainsectionofthedictionaryinlargerprint,andwithakeysymbolimmediatelyfollowing.OntheCD-ROMthekeywordsareshowninred.Themostusefulpartsoftheentries(particularpartsofspeech,meanings
6、,phrasalverbsandidioms)aremarkedwithasmallkeysymbol.Theentriesforkeywordsoftenhaveextrainformationintheformofmoreexamplesofuse,specialnotesexplainingsynonymsorrelatedwords,orhelpfulillustrations.Thismeansthatthekeywordsmakeanexcellentstartingpointforexpandingyourvocabulary.Withmostkeyword
