3、xotic”plants,astheyarecalled,datesbacktotheearliesttimes.Manyancientcivilisationssawthevalueofbringingbackplantsfromdistantlands.Thefirstplantcollectingexpeditionrecordedinhistorywasaround1500BCwhentheQueenofEgyptsentshipsawaytogatherplants,animalsandothergoods.However,itwasnotuntilth
4、eeighteenthandnineteenthcenturiesthattheexplorationofthebotanicalworldbeganonalargescale.EuropehadbecomeinterestedinscientificdiscoveryandtheEuropeanmiddleclassestookgreatinterestincollectingnewplants.ThisattractiontoexoticplantsgrewasEuropeannations,liketheNetherlands,BritainandSpain
5、,movedintootherpartsoftheworldlikeAsiaandAustralia.Braveyoungmentooktheopportunityofgoingonbotanicalexpeditions,oftenfacingmanydangersincludingdisease,near-starvation,severeenvironmentsandconflictswiththelocalpeople.AnimportantgroupofcollectorswereFrenchCatholicmissionarieswho,bythemi
6、ddleofthe18thcentury,werebeginningtosetthemselvesupinChina.Onesuchmissionary,Fatherd’Incarville,wassenttoBeijinginthe1740s.HecollectedseedsoftreesandbushesincludingthoseoftheTreeofHeaven.Justbeforehedied,hesentsomeTreeofHeavenseedstoEngland.Theyarrivedin1751andplantsfromtheseseedswere
7、grownthroughoutEuropeandlater,in1784,thespecieswasintroducedinNorthAmerica.SirJosephBankswasaveryfamousBritishplantcollector,whoaccompaniedJamesCookonhisfirstvoyagefromEnglandtoOceania.ThepurposeofthetripforBankswastorecordtheplantandanimallifetheycameacross.Heandhisteamcollectedexamp
